Full Gender Equality In Olympic Boxing

13 Weight Categories Announced for Boxing at Paris 2024 Olympics

Full Gender Equality in Olympic Boxing

13 Weight Classes to be Contested, New Category for Men

In a significant step towards full gender equality in boxing, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will feature 13 weight categories in the sport.

Previously, there were only 8 weight categories for men and 5 for women. The addition of 6 new weight classes for women brings the total number of categories to 7 for men and 6 for women, ensuring equal opportunities for boxers of all genders.

The new weight class for men is the Flyweight (51kg), while the weight classes for men and women remain largely unchanged. The Olympic boxing tournament follows a simple knockout format with draws made at random for each weight class.

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who won a medal in the Welterweight category at the Tokyo Olympics, may have to switch categories for Paris 2024 as her weight class (69kg) is not included in the new system.
